The Monstera Devil Monster as a single tissue culture in a sterile bag. At young stages the cultivar usually shows a restrained variegation that strengthens with age and growth: pale cream, white and mint on a dark green ground.
 
Monstera is the most robust of the collector genera and forgives mistakes. What matters is bright light, a free-draining mix and restraint when watering. Provide a support and higher humidity and the leaves come out considerably larger — without a support the plant stays in its juvenile leaf form.
 
The variegation is sectoral. Every new leaf develops its own pattern: sometimes a pronounced half-moon, sometimes a mostly green leaf, sometimes a very pale one. This variation is inherent to the mechanism and cannot be controlled through care. The node tells you more than the current leaf: shoots emerging from variegated tissue are more likely to carry the pattern forward.
 
The plant arrives small and sterile from the lab. Rinse the nutrient gel off under lukewarm water before planting, then set it into moist sphagnum or a fine mix and keep it in a closed box at very high humidity for two to four weeks, opening it gradually afterwards. Only feed once new roots are visible. Note: in chimeral cultivars the expression can differ from the mother plant — tissue culture does not guarantee an identical pattern.
